Modern Foreign Languages

Key Stage 3
In Years 7 and 8  all pupils study either French or Spanish depending on which side of the year they are in. Pupils have 2 lessons a week during Key Stage 3.  Pupils are set in groups from the beginning of year 7.    The Key Stage 3 syllabus prepares pupils well for the new style GCSE which is compulsory.  It teaches pupils to be confident speaking, listening, reading and writing in their newly aquired second language.

Key Stage 4

We currently use the AQA exam board for all language GCSEs.  The four language skills are equally weighted at 25% each and all exams are sat at the end of year 11 during the summer GCSE exams.  Pupils will have a short speaking examination with their class teacher at the beginning of the exam period including a role play as well as an exchange of questions and answers, followed by listening, reading and writing exams which contain exercises such as translation and letter writing.

Key Stage 5

We have a growing A level group and offer AS and A2 level French and Spanish, students have 4 hours of lessons a week and are given extra opportunities for speaking lessons and support sessions.
We currently use the AQA exam board for GCE A levels. All exams are taken at the end of the course during the examination period in year 13

Extra-Curricular

We have a coursework catch up club in French, Italian and Spanish for KS4 students and a European Film Club

Trips

We offer Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils the opportunity to visit Birmingham and Aston University on Language Workshop days. We hold Reward Days for our Linguists of the Month (Most recently at Pizza Express) We have been to Rome and Andalucía with Key Stage 4 pupils and we are currently organising French and Spanish trips for 2016-7

Our department is starting to build links with schools in other countries, and we are excited by the prospect of communicating with young people from different cultures.
