Woodrush High School

An Academy for Students Aged 11-18

Homework

In Year 7 to 9 homework will be set regularly by all subjects. Knowledge Organisers will be given to all students at the start of each term and will contain all the key factual information that they need to succeed in lessons and to support their homework. Homework will be built around retrieval practice, please see the summary below:

What is Retrieval Practice Types of Retrieval Practice
  •  Engaging with the work by answering questions, creating flash cards etc. rather than reading over notes
  • Recalling things from memory to check whether they have been remembered and transferred to long term memory
  • By answering retrieval questions, based on knowledge, can reduce exam anxiety and is great for memory.
  • Quick Quizzes
  • Flash cards
  • Mind maps
  • Multiple Choice

Here is an example of a Retrieval Quiz from maths:

During September, students will be taught how to complete their homework and what is expected, and we will go through how to effectively use the knowledge organisers.

Students will also be expected to read regularly at home as well as practice key maths skills.

In Year 10 and 11 homework is set by every subject and this will be different for each subject. Homework will be more in the form of examination questions and application questions to prepare them for their GCSE examinations.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Encourage your child to read as much and as often as possible
  • If possible, provide a quiet place for your child to complete their homework
  • Check Microsoft teams with your child to see what homework they have been set.
